About Lesson
-
Scale and Intransparency:
- AI systems are voraciously data-hungry, and their opacity makes it difficult for us to control what information is collected, how it’s used, and whether we can correct or remove personal data.
- Unlike the past decades of internet commercialization, where data collection was already a concern, AI magnifies the scale of surveillance, leaving us with even less control over our digital footprint.
-
Anti-Social Uses:
- Bad actors exploit AI-generated data for nefarious purposes. For instance, generative AI tools scrape internet data, memorizing personal information about individuals and their social connections. This enables spear-phishing, identity theft, and fraud.
- AI voice cloning is also weaponized to impersonate people and extort them over phone calls.
-
Data Repurposing:
- Information we share—such as resumes or photographs—can be repurposed for AI training without our knowledge or consent.
- Predictive systems, used by employers to screen job candidates, may inadvertently introduce biases, affecting hiring decisions.
-
Web Scraping, Biometrics, and IoT:
- AI collects data through web scraping, which automatically harvests information from websites.
- Biometric technologies (like facial recognition) intrude into personal privacy by capturing unique data about individuals.
- IoT devices and social media monitoring also contribute to the vast data pool.
